International Car Rental Show To Focus On Security

Security

Panel to instruct companies on how to deal with terrorism.

Technology and statewide legislation surrounding ride-sharing across the country, in addition to its ongoing legislative efforts, will be major issues to be tackled at the 2019 International Car Rental Show, running April 14-16 at Paris Hotel in Las Vegas. However one more item will be getting a great deal of scrutiny during the three-day event.

Security of car rentals, especially concerning incidents involving terrorists will be part of one major session at the convention, held annually by the American Car Rental Association. The session, taking place April 15 at 10 a.m., will include panelists from the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI. One particular non-government speaker will likely provide some additional insight into how car rental businesses can reduce the likelihood of terrorism.

That would be Mike Rozin, owner of Rozin Security, which has handled such high-profile events as the host committee segment of Super Bowl LII, held in Minneapolis, MN back in 2018. Rozin was the event’s chief security officer. Other credentials include handling security at Tel Aviv’s Ben-Gurion International Airport as well as special security operations at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota.

The seminar is geared towards providing critical information to car rental staff on how to prevent terrorist incidents involving their fleet. That will include tips on how to identify extremist behavior before it happens and sending that information to the proper authorities. Several terrorist incidents in recent years have involved vehicle rentals.

One of the most horrific incidents involved a man who drove a large rental truck into a crowd of Bastille Day revelers in Nice, France back in 2016. A Tunisian nationalist was behind the wheel of the attack, which killed 86 bystanders. In 2017, a man rented a pickup truck to kill eight people and injure nearly a dozen others near New York’s World Trade Center. ISIS claimed responsibility for being behind both events.

While U.S. authorities look at ways to cut down on terrorist incidents involving rented vehicles, including the scheduled seminar, the U.K. has already adopted one measure. In December, the federal government’s Department for Transport unveiled the Rental Vehicle Security Scheme designed to cut down on terrorists using rentals for violent acts. All players in the rental industry have to stick to a 10-point code of conduct that requires the reporting of suspicious behavior and sharing other pertinent information with law enforcement officials. The measures stress using electronic transactions, which can easily be traced much faster.
